Two Days: Tuesday, August 2 (9 am – 4 pm) and Wednesday, August 3 (9 am – 4 pm)
Restorative Justice fosters school communities where students and staff find belonging and understanding. Traditional zero-tolerance policies not only rob students of precious learning time, but also rob them of a sense of belonging and the need to feel wanted, heard, and valued. In this workshop, students and educators will learn about the historical roots and philosophy of Restorative Justice, as well as examine how Restorative Justice is being implemented in schools and communities across the country. You will also participate in the foundational Restorative Justice practice of youth-led community circles and learn practical skills for how to begin or strengthen Restorative Practices in your classroom and school.
Objectives: Educators and students will…
- understand and respect the indigenous roots of Restorative Justice, and explore how to avoid and interrupt cultural appropriation within Restorative Justice Practices.
- explore the possible impacts of Restorative Justice on students and society. We will discuss the importance of disrupting the school-to-prison pipeline which stems from the current unjust zero-tolerance system.
- engage with the community-building circle process, examine the different types and purposes of circles, and effectively plan and facilitate community-building circles. Circles are foundational to Restorative Justice.
- gain experience implementing Restorative Justice Practices to effectively establish safe and trusting communities which balance expectations between teachers and students so that everyone may feel heard, valued, loved, and respected.
