We were always told that school is designed to prepare us for the real world but are we actually prepared?
We were always told to aspire, to inspire- but how?
When schools strip us from being creative and unique.
When we’re told that the grade you get on a test doesn’t define who you are- but how? When those who succeed are honored and those who fail are shamed.
The truth is our school system isn’t the same anymore.
Our students today aren’t learning, just trying to pass.
Our students aren’t actually prepared for the real world but are prepared to take a test in math Our students have prioritized homework over family time
And have become robots that go to school, do homework and repeat.
Students lock themselves in their rooms for hours doing homework – for what? Are they ever going to use the equations they memorize?
Or explain the difference between mitosis and meiosis?
Or write an essay about a Shakespeare play?
And I know all of this
but you know what I don’t know?
I don’t know how taxes or insurance works,
I don’t know how to control my emotions,
Real life responsibilities,
I don’t know how to stand up for myself,
I don’t know how to hold a conversation without stuttering and shaking Instead im taught to keep quiet because its respectful.
The American school system is failing
not only us but also the students of our future.
If we don’t stand up and fight for change in schools, then we will continue to feel abandoned and broken Zombies in the hallways numb to our surroundings.
